November brings to mind cool, crisp weather and brightly colored red, orange and gold leaves. Jewelry fans born in November recreate the warm colors of the season with their birth gemstones, topaz and citrine.
Both the topaz and citrine are typically set in yellow gold, which is considered November’s birthstone color. The warmth of the colors can brighten the coolest November day, and look great with traditional fall colors. These gems, as well as other yellow and gold jewelry pieces like our Lemon Quartz ‘Arts Form’ Pendant or our Smokey Quartz diamond ring, are perfect editions to any jewelry collection.
The traditional November birthstone is the topaz. This golden gemstone was a favorite of ancient Egyptians, and ranges in color from a soft yellow to a strong honey brown, to a more expensive Imperial Topaz, which can go to a beautiful pink brown.
Citrine is one of the rarest forms of quartz, and this gemstone ranges in color from pale yellow to dark amber. The name of the gemstone is derived from an old French word, “citrin”, meaning lemon. The gemstone citrine changes color when subjected to heat, and many jewelry-makers use this to their advantage, heating the gemstone to intensify its warm, rich color. Citrine is mined in Brazil, Bolivia and Madagascar.
These November birthstones first became popular during the Romantic Period, when jewelry artisans began using citrine to enhance gold jewelry. As an added bonus, citrine was believed to have magical powers and was often worn as a guard against evil thoughts. It was also commonly used to treat certain medical conditions.
Because of the rarity of the gem, many citrine stones sold commercially are actually heat treated quartz.
Topaz and citrine are symbols for hope and strength. Either of these beautiful, bright gemstones would make a great birthday present for any jewelry lover this month!
