Citrine is one of the rarest forms of quartz, and this gemstone ranges in color from pale yellow to dark amber. The name of the gemstone is derived from an old French word, “citrin”, meaning lemon. The gemstone citrine changes color when subjected to heat, and many jewelry-makers use this to their advantage, heating the gemstone to intensify its warm, rich color. Citrine is mined in Brazil, Bolivia and Madagascar.
These November birthstones first became popular during the Romantic Period, when jewelry artisans began using citrine to enhance gold jewelry. As an added bonus, citrine was believed to have magical powers and was often worn as a guard against evil thoughts. It was also commonly used to treat certain medical conditions.
Because of the rarity of the gem, many citrine stones sold commercially are actually heat treated quartz.
