Summer Birthstones: Pearl, Ruby and Peridot

06.24.2012

Have a summer birthday or a loved one who’s celebrating one? Birthstone jewelry can add a nice, personal touch to any special occasion. It’s a thoughtful way to say, “Marry me,” as an alternative to the traditional diamond engagement ring, or “Thanks for putting up with being married to me,” as an anniversary gift.”

We’ve provided a little lowdown on each gemstone along with some fun finds:

June: Pearl

Anniversary: 30th

Pearls are pure and classic. Studs and a strands add an air of sophistication, whether they’re paired with an LBD or jeans and a blazer. Princess Kate dons them on a regular basis as does the First Lady:

The great thing about pearls is their versatility. While they are fit for a queen, you can also pile ‘em on for a more fun, forward look:

We also love seeing pearls added as a touch of soft to an edgier design:

And here’s an interesting tidbit from The GEMaffair Diaries (a little cocktail conversation for your next soiree):

June is special because it has the only organic gemstone of the bunch.  Pearls are considered living gems as they come from organic matter. Other living gems include coral, amber, jet and ivory.

July: Ruby

Anniversaries: 15th & 40th

Sanskrit for “King of Gemstones”, rubies are believed to be very powerful, protecting those who wear them from sickness and misfortune. And the rich range of reds (pinkish to brownish) are the perfect way to express your passion. July birthday girl Jessica Simpson has a ruby engagement ring:

Worried that ruby red feels too heavy for the summer? See how light n’ lively it looks on these stunning pave ruby earrings:

August: Peridot

Anniversary: 16th

A favorite stone of Cleopatra, peridot (pronounced “pear-a-doe”) is a definite do. This unsung olive green gem deserves its time in limelight. Here are a couple of interesting facts about peridot courtesy of RedEnvelope:

  • In Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the goddess Pele’s tears. Some Hawaiian beaches are packed with tiny grains of peridot that are too small to cut into gems.
  • The birthstone of August is said to bring the wearer good luck, peace and success, its powers also include health, protection and sleep. The advantages of peridot are to attract love while also soothing nerves and dispelling negative emotions and anxiety.

Luck be a lady who’s wearing these gorgeous peridot earrings:
